~ Synopsis ~

Beth is always running from love, life and relationships and yet another disastrous break up finds her in a little village in Cornwall. She just wants to be left alone to enjoy the quiet country life and continue her work as a freelance artisst.

Liam was young, free and single, enjoying the sun, surf and sex life to be found living in Cornwall, until tragedy strikes his own family and he is left on his own trying to keep the family farm going.

Two lost souls not wanting to be saved until fate and a little Cornish magic steps in.

~ My Thoughts ~

My Rating: 3 / 5

Life for Rent is a quick read with a lot of romance packed into its pages. Beth and Liam are two characters who have a lot of hurt and pain in their respective pasts. You find out about Liam's right away while Beth's past isn't revealed until much later. Liam runs his family farm and is a hard worker, rarely taking time to have fun with friends. Beth is a freelance artist who can't seem to stay put in one place for long. She's a free spirit who's afraid of settling down.

While I enjoyed the basic story overall, there were a few things I didn't like. Beth and Liam acted and spoke more like teenagers than adults. I found myself liking Beth except when she was around or thinking about Liam. Beth seemed to prefer casual sex rather than an actual relationship, which I thought was something new and interesting in regards to a female character.

There are so many male characters who are all about casual sex while the female characters pine for them, making me feel a bit ill. It's about time there's a female character like Beth. I'm all about equality between women and men. ;)

I felt Life for Rent was rather lacking in plot. I know the story is about Beth and Liam needing love and possibly finding it in each other, but I don't need to know every minute of their mundane routines. There were many sections which had them doing tasks that were a little boring to read about for me.

What makes this story different from other romances I've read is magic. Literal magic. Those parts of the story were fun and a bit silly to read. If you're a hopeless romantic looking for a quick read, give this one a try.

  1. It's always nice to read a story where the female character isn't stereotypical, and these days, I have enjoyed lots of New Adult romances, so I might just add Life for Rent to my TBR as well.

Thanks for the great review, Jennifer!

    1. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the female character wasn't a stereotypical I'm-gonna-stalk-this-guy kind of chick. Hope you like this book, Lexxie! :D

  2. Ah, I've watched a few movies where silly magic brought the characters together, like Simply Irresistible. Love that corny stuff, I'm telling you. I also like the girl being the unattainable one. You're right about the guys always being about the casual sex. Great review, Jennifer!

    1. Though I can't say this book was for me, it might be a book others will enjoy more than I did. I wish I was wrong about the double standard. I really liked the girl being the unattainable one. I thought that was fresh and interesting. I hope you like this book. :)

  3. I can't take young adults who talk like teenagers any more than I can take teenagers who talk like adults. Bummer, it sounded like it could be a fun read. Sorry you couldn't love it more.

    1. I think sometimes as adults we forget how we talked when we were teenagers, and I think that's what happened here. I can't really say this book was for me, but other people might like it more than I did. I'm sorry, too. Thanks Ali. :D
